Already one year after being beta tested, the “WhatsApp Dark” mode is finally official for all Android and IOS devices. The company belonging to Facebook has designed a “dark grey” background with “off-white” color elements to reduce glare and improve contrast for better readability.
Users of recent versions of Android 10 and iOS 13 will be able to easily activate WhatsApp’s dark mode from their devices’ system settings. However, users of earlier versions will need to manually enable dark mode through the WhatsApp application’s theme preferences. Instant Messaging wants to protect our retinas!
The dark mode on WhatsApp is primarily aimed at minimizing eye strain by using colors closer to the system defaults on Android and iPhone smartphones. If we go back to previous reports, the feature has been in preparation since at least March last year.
“Hello Darkness, my old friend” is how WhatsApp announced the good news to its users on Twitter. In addition, the company recently updated its profile pictures on all its social media to promote the arrival of the long-awaited new feature.
The WhatsApp team focused on content readability and hierarchy of information while thinking about user ergonomics, as explained in a blog post. The key objective was to help users focus their attention on each instant messaging screen when using the dark mode.
Facebook has indeed modified the display mode of its WhatsApp application to reduce the brightness of phone screens and therefore protect your retinas, especially the most light-sensitive ones. “During testing, we found that the combination of pure black and white creates high contrast that can cause eye strain,” said a WhatsApp spokesperson. “Instead, you’ll find a dark gray background and off-white color that reduces screen brightness, reduces glare and improves contrast and readability,” he adds.
How do I enable WhatsApp’s dark mode on Android and IOS?
To take advantage of WhatsApp’s dark mode, first make sure your application is up to date. Please note that on Android, dark mode is available starting with version 2.20.65. While on iOS, the dark theme is available from version 2.20.30.
If you are using Android 10 or IOS 13 versions, you generally have nothing to activate if you use a dark theme for your device’s interface by default. However, if you are using older versions, you will need to enable the WhatsApp dark theme manually. Here’s how to do this:
Go to WhatsApp Settings (using the options button in the upper right corner of the screen)
Click on the Discussions menu
Under the View heading, enter the Theme menu
Select the “Dark” theme
