At first glance, transhumanism may seem strange, unnatural and even frightening to some, to the point that they even call for the banning of its technologies, which are perceived as interference with the divine plans. Yet transhumanism, which is often represented by an “H+”, does indeed mean an improvement of the human. In the course of this article we return with Jean-Jacques Perrut on some principles related to transhumanism.
What is transhumanism?
Transhumanism is a current of thought that advocates the use of science and technology to improve the characteristics of humans both mentally and physically. It is based on the idea that human beings are currently in a transitional stage of development. Jean-Jacques Perrut defines transhumanism as a phase between humanism and post-humanism. Post-humanism advocates the possession of basic capacities much more advanced than those of humans today, noting as an example that the post-human may be immortal, endowed with eternal youth, resistant to disease, or capable of controlling his needs and even his mental states. Transhumanism seems to have the potential to open new horizons, which today’s human with his brain and current capacities cannot reach.
The attitude of the transhumanists
On the other hand, transhumanists can also have down-to-earth minds. Indeed, many transhumanists apply their philosophies in their daily lives, favouring certain diets and the practice of sports activities, with the aim of improving their health and prolonging their lives. Some may even go as far as the use of medicines likely to modulate their personality and mood, the application of psychological techniques, or the consideration of cryonic suspension.
According to Jean-Jacques Perrut, optimism is the common point among all transhumanists. It is indeed, an attitude allowing to reach the desired results only by a few judicious choices and quite sustained efforts.
The most debated themes in transhumanism
Contrary to what is widespread, transhumanism has no interest in today’s world. However, the subjects relating to transhumanism that are currently being debated touch on different themes such as: neuro-morphology, nervous systems, or sexuality.
Moreover, for Jean-Jacques Perrut, as for most transhumanists, the philosophy of this movement sees itself as a positive current that opposes the categorical rejection of notions that go beyond the limits of our mental and perception process. It invites a better meditation of the world and the understanding of its evolution.
As a result, transhumanists see technological progress as efforts made by humanity to find new solutions to improve human conditions and overcome biological limits.
