Isowatt and rock wool

At Isowatt, the solar specialist, we provide many solutions for consumers who want to disconnect from the grid, who want to consume clean energy or who simply want to reduce their energy bills. In addition to the installation of panels, we also offer heating systems based on solar energy. As informed professionals, we also offer consumers our expertise in the field of insulation and have chosen an ecological, high-performance and inexpensive insulator: rock wool.

Isowatt: what is rock wool?

Rock wool is obtained by mixing several natural minerals, including basalt which is a mineral resulting from the lava flows of volcanoes, which is then transformed by melting and fiberizing. The process of making rock wool is similar to the natural activity of a volcano. The basalt is melted in a furnace heated with coke at 1,500 °C. Wheels rotating at a very high speed transform the molten rock into fibres. A binder is added to the fibres and an impregnating oil is added to make the product stable and water-repellent, before it is transformed into various finished products.

Rock wool is available in different types of packaging, in bulk it is found in flakes for spreading, in rolls, in rigid panels to meet the requirements of certain applications thanks to its high mechanical resistance.

When insulating a house, our technicians take care not to compress the semi-rigid rock wool because compressed insulation traps less air, which will increase its conductivity and decrease thermal resistance. To avoid having to compress the rock wool, we take care to cut it to the precise dimension.

Why rock wool?

It is a porous material whose insulating capacity comes from the inert air retained in the cavities resulting from the interweaving of its fibres. It has many insulating qualities and our technicians use it as a thermal insulator, sound insulator or sound absorber, while allowing the consumer to take advantage of its fire-resistant and hydrophobic qualities.
It is these properties, even more than the economic and natural nature of rock wool, that convinced us at Isowatt to use it to insulate our customers’ homes.

– As thermal insulators, our technicians insulate attics, walls and floors in order to avoid thermal bridges synonymous with heat loss.
– Sound insulation and sound absorption, rock wool is an effective protection against noise pollution.
– Fireproof, rock wool is flammable, does not give off toxic fumes and resists fire while preventing it from spreading.
– Hydrophobic, water runs off its surface and makes it impossible for water or snow to infiltrate into the insulated home.
– It is also an excellent barrier against insects and other termites, as its mineral structure is completely devoid of organic elements that can be used as food.
