Art-Deco style, an elegant trend

The art-deco style is very representative of the period from the 1920s to the 1930s. At that time, this style presents a real break with art-nouveau. Nowadays, it is coming back to fashionable taste in interiors that are often refined and elegant and in which the materials are chosen with care. A look back at this decorative style with the interior designer, Laurent Hosana.

The art-deco style, what is it?

It is the art of the Roaring Twenties which is representative of the general artistic movement of the time. In the decoration and architecture we find mainly geometric forms, symmetry and sobriety. As far as furniture is concerned, one finds essentially noble materials such as mahogany wood, marble, brass. However, quality fabrics such as silk, velvet and leather are also favoured. As far as colours are concerned, black is very present, associated with warmer colours such as emerald green or powdered pink.

What does today’s “neo” art-deco correspond to?

If you’re attentive to decoration trends, you’ve certainly noticed that the art-deco style is once again declining today. There is a real trend towards velvet for seating and another towards brass for small furniture. The graphic and geometrical spirit is also coming back to the forefront in terms of decoration, particularly thanks to wallpapers. This style is perfectly suited to a warm and intimate interior that mixes colours with elegance.

How to combine the art-deco style with other trends?

Although the art-deco style is very elegant and makes you want to rearrange your whole interior, you have to be careful about the total art-deco look. Indeed, it can sometimes seem too overloaded and thus prevent you from feeling at home. It is therefore preferable to use it sparingly, by associating it, for example, with a Scandinavian style. These two styles can be perfectly combined provided that the interior is well balanced between the two styles and that overloading is avoided at all costs.
